About half of Georgia’s birthing hospitals are currently screening or had plans to start screening newborn babies for critical congenital heart defects (CCHD) by the end of 2012. Currently, Georgia does not require newborn screening for CCHD. Therefore, the choice to screen newborns for CCHD lies with each hospital. Barriers to screening included:

No clear follow-up plan for babies who screen positive for CCHD

Uncertainty about reporting results to the public health department

Concern about the costs to begin and maintain screening activities

Many hospitals lacked the resources to confirm a CCHD diagnosis at their own hospital. Among hospitals that were already screening for CCHD, screening practices varied.

Andy and I stopped off in Beverly Hills to spend the night on our way home from Guam. When I had toured it back in the summer, I thought it was pretty and green, and said that if I ever visited LA again I would stay in Beverly Hills. We stayed at the Crescent Hotel just two blocks from Rodeo Drive. The hotel is a small boutique type but very comfortable. The rooms were tiny but charming and the bed was welcomed after we had been flying for sixteen hours.

We slept for five hours and then went out to visit the Beverly Hills Hotel on Wilshire Blvd. Afterwards we walked through one of the neighborhoods and enjoy the beautiful yards. I don’t think I’ve ever need to a place where the lawns are more manicured. After having a late lunch/early supper, we had our heads back in bed to fly out the next morning.

I loved the bedside lights. They hung from the ceiling and dimmed. I couldn’t figure out a way to bring one home.

Bath sink was bad either.

We then flew eight hours to Guam, and another 45 minutes to Saipan. We spent three nights there, with a day trip to Tinain. There we rode on the runway where the Enola Gay left carrying the atom bomb. Very cool moment. From Saipan, we returned to Guam. One day, my birthday, we flew to Iwo Jima, Japan. We spent the day hiking Mt. Surichri and on the breach. It was a memorable birthday.

Drew and I share the same birthday. Because I had crossed the international dateline my birthday was the day before Drew’s.
